 Artist Statement

My work is like windows to my past. My maternal grandmother was a great storyteller. She inspired me with her stories, told to me on all those starry nights in Honduras. In my child's mind I imagined beautiful things, and felt the wonder of them. My goal as an artist has been to inspire the viewer in the same way. I honor my grandmother by painting icons depicting strong, beautiful women like she was, and I continue to put stars in my works in her honor; it's how I remember her. My paintings have also been influenced by Latin American traditions and the Native cultures of the Americas.

I work with acrylics, and I have recently been experimenting with oils. The women I paint are not anyone in particular, they just come out of the canvas, and when they are done, I am pleased to meet them. The religious pictures I saw on my grandmother's altar influenced my iconic style.
